Savannah
Okaukuejo waterholeWith so much water elsewhere in the Park, the waterholes at Etosha's rest camps were mostly deserted (although we did see a black rhino lurking in the shadows for several minutes at Halali one night). The most numerous larger animals on the savannah were springboks and impalas, and these must support healthy populations of predators. The males in the bachelor herds of impalas were busy fighting to decide who would take over the next available harem of females. We also saw quite a few giraffes, including a cute baby which had the time and energy to run around for no particular reason. The only predators we saw were black-backed jackals, a solitary spotted hyena, and lions (including a close encounter with a small group on a night drive, but unfortunately no photos). Squirrels provided entertainment around the rest camps as they often do, and a visit to the Cheetah Conservation Fund's rescue and rehabilitation centre at Otjiwarongo en route to Waterberg Plateau gave us close-up views of some of the rescued animals.
