Like a lot of travellers, I sometimes overlook the wildlife and wild places 'in my own backyard', but in between the overseas trips I've walked many miles through Yorkshire and Lincolnshire and I thought it was about time I shared a few photos. It's difficult to spot and photograph wild animals with a dog in tow, so the images are mostly of landscapes, trees and other things that don't run, swim or fly away.

The focus for a lot of my walks is the Yorkshire Wolds Way, a 79 mile (127km) National Trail. For the uninitiated, 'wold' is a term used in England to describe a range of hills which overlie a base of limestone or chalk. The Yorkshire and Lincolnshire Wolds are geologically a single range, but physically separated by the Humber Estuary.

The Wolds Way and the rest of the network of footpaths, nature reserves and country parks cover a whole range of habitats and several important breeding and overwintering sites for mammals and birds.

My favourite habitat for walks is woodland, where I like to photograph trees - whole ones and bits of them, like leaves, roots and bark.
